What is Holistic Massage Therapy?
One of the first questions I
get asked about is:"What does holistic mean?"
Merriam-Webster dictionary states:
Relating to or concerned with wholes or
with complete systems rather than with the analysis of, treatment of, or dissection into
medicine attempts to treat both the mind and the body. Holistic
ecology views humans and the environment as a single system.
"With all honor and respect to my Ancestors"
is an ancient therapeutic treatment. Countless civilizations throughout
history have recognized the healing power of human touch, especially in
Eastern cultures (China and Egypt) this
form of massage deals with you as a 'whole'. Like other therapies, it is not
just treating the symptoms, but to
establish the internal and/or external concerns. The aim is to re-balance
the body so it achieves homeostasis. The therapist
is trained quite extensively, as it not only covers massage, but also anatomy, physiology and kinesiology, energy healing philosophy & concept, nutrition and general health.
What Happens When I Go For A Maat Holistic Health Session?
At the first consultation with your practitioner/therapist, you will be
asked to complete a detailed health questionnaire. This will take about 15-20 minutes
as it goes over just about every aspect of your health and lifestyle, what goes
in your body and what comes out. From this information the therapist can put
together a profile for you and tailor the massage treatment to suit. The therapist keeps
a note of each session, which for you means that after a few visits you can
come in, 'flop' down on the table and the therapist knows what you need.
What Are The Health Benefits Of Maat Holistic Health Session?
Massage benefits are basic on spirit, mind and body connections. It is rare that we take an hour to
lie down, close our eyes and just 'be'. An hour's peace and quiet away
from ringing phones and demanding children has a definite restorative
For the body, the massage treatment helps taut muscles learn to relax and this,
combined with strokes to aid lymphatic drainage, helps to release toxins and realign the energy fields. The
benefits can be felt by all ages, backgrounds and lifestyles. According to the
Massage Association, research has verified that office workers massaged
regularly were more alert, performed better and were less stressed than those
who weren't massaged. It is not just office workers who benefit. Stress affects
different people in countless ways, physically and emotionally. Stiffness and
soreness in muscles can be due to a wide range of physical factors from an
overly energetic gym sessions, carrying too much, poor posture through being
seated at a desk all day or long period of time behind the steering wheel. The
causes are not always physical however. Day
to day mental/emotionalstresserswhich causes tension can manifest into
headaches causing a stiff neck, shoulders and other tensing response to stress.
Massage can help people to deal with emotional problems such as grief and
depression. Some massage therapists specialize in pregnant women, to enable a
drug free delivery. Young babies and children benefit from massage – stroking
and touch are a great way for parent and child to bond. Children with ADHD have
been shown to respond well to long soothing effleurage strokes.
Our Elders benefit as well. For the elderly it can be difficult to get
around, resulting in lack of exercise and muscle atrophy or unable to reach their
lower legs and feet. Massage will stimulate blood flow while inducing a feeling of well-being through the comfort of human touch where touch is lacking.
A Wellness Massage has been found to have many benefits, including:
Reduction in muscle spasm, pain and tension
Release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers
Relaxation and therefore reducing anxiety
Improved blood circulation
Improved lymphatic drainage
Improved mobility and flexibility
Reduction of swelling caused by an accumulation of fluid/waste in the tissue cells
Balancing the overall flow of natural life-force energy through the body
Inducing a feeling of well-being through the comfort and power of human touch
Any Reasons Why I Can Not Be Able To Have A
There are several factors which preclude massage, for example if the
you are ill and/or has a fever. You are also advised not to drink alcohol or
take drugs (unless by prescription!) in the 24 hours before and after the
massage. This could affect the liver and kidneys as in addition to the toxins
released by the massage they will also be trying to cope with toxins from the
drug. People with some conditions (such as cancer) may be treated only
with consent from their GP. Your therapist will advise you, as the list is
What Happens After My Maat Holistic Health Session And Between
At the end of the session the health practitioner/therapist may give you
advice about what you can try in between treatments to maintain or improve your
body's balance and inner peace. For example, if you had the complaint of frequent headaches, it
may be tension but one of the contributory factors may be too many caffeinated drinks (like carbonated drinks, coffee, chocolate) and/or the need to increase your
The medical benefits are very well documented with throughout books and
websites devoted to the health & wellness, But you don't need a medical reason to
enjoy a massage wellness session. A regular massage – bi-weekly or monthly if you can afford it, will
keep the body stabilize, energized and balanced. Adding a Maat Holistic massage to your maintenance routine, will be rewarding inside and out. If the inner you is in
a good state of well being, then it will radiate through to your outer appearance.
are few experiences more pleasurable than to be stroked, caressed and cared for
intimately by a healing touch. From the moment we are born we are touched and
physically nurtured by our parents making us feel warm and safe in a new and
strange world. Our bodies are physically, emotionally and psychologically
designed for this, it is no coincidence that for most of us, when feeling
another's touch, it relaxes us, stimulates us, we feel good, we feel we belong
and rarely will we ask for it healing feeling to stop".
